Project background
Before the project, Madagascar faced numerous challenges:
- Local rice prices fluctuated widely between the harvest and dry seasons, leading to market instability and limited local employment opportunities.
- Furthermore, farmers’ incomes were often far lower than those of traders and importers, creating economic imbalances, suppressing the financial benefits of production, and dampening enthusiasm for agricultural development.

Customer needs analysis
When planning the Ethical Rice Industry campaign, the cooperative identified three main priorities:
- The machines must have a daily processing capacity of at least 15 tons of paddy rice, which is capable of operating for extended periods, especially during the harvest season.
- The production line needed to be adaptable to the local climate, durable, easy to maintain, and sufficient to establish a long-term, locally operated rice mill to promote agricultural development.
- The machines need to be easy to operate, with remote training provided to facilitate quick and stable employment for local people.
