Selama panen dan penyimpanan, kotoran seperti serpihan, batu, dll., mungkin ada dalam gabah. Selain itu, adanya sekam gabah juga dapat memengaruhi proses penggilingan berikutnya. Dengan menggiling beras beberapa kali, gabah yang masih murni dapat dimanfaatkan lebih sepenuhnya, mengurangi limbah dan meningkatkan hasil.
